Biodiesel from Microalgae Can Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 80%

Biodiesel from microalgae can save diesel engines in the future.


Cars with diesel engines could survive in the future due to a new biofuel that is cleaner than the diesel obtained from oil.

Biodiesel obtained from microalgae could power buses, trucks and even cars, and can reduce the level of greenhouse gas emissions released by these vehicles by 80%.

A team of experts from the Department of Chemical Engineering and Bioprocesses at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile works in a project that uses a large number of microalgae from which they are extracting an oil that can be converted into biofuel (after removing moisture and debris).

Getting clean fuel from algae is not a new thing, what is new here is the fact that the team in Chile gets the biofuel from microalgae (a vast group of photosynthetic and heterotrophic organisms with an extraordinary potential for cultivation as energy crops).

Today, biodiesel is usually extracted from soybean oil or is made from animal fat, canola or even palm oil.

The head of the team, researcher Carlos Saez stated that the main challenge of his team is to obtain a massive volume of microalgae to get a large amount of biofuel.

Chile hosts a wide variety of fresh and salt water algaes, which can be a great source of microalgae for the team.

Another goal of the team is to improve the algae growing technology because they need to ramp up the production of biofuel using a low amount of energy and minimal costs.
