A Chinese newspaper called “Global Times” considers that Donald Trump’s crusade against all the measures to tackle climate change established by the former Obama administration, represents a very dangerous move because there is no country in the world today (including China) that can take on all the responsibilities on this matter.
Global Times says that China doesn’t feel comfortable to take over the leadership of the fight against climate change and can’t cover the gap left by the U.S.
The Chinese editorial considers that the Western media should continue to pressure the Trump administration on the climate change issue because “Trump’s selfishness must be discouraged”.
Why is China so angry toward Trump’s decision the dismantle all the measures taken by the Obama administration to tackle climate change?
China is today the fastest developing economy in the world, but also the largest polluter in the world because in order to develop the economy very fast, China consumes more coal than all the other countries in the world combined.
Being so busy with the rapid economic growth, China has no time and financial resources to replace the U.S. in the fight against climate change, so it tries to turn the Western media against the Trump administration because it hopes that the problem can be solved locally (in the U.S.).
China is the largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world today, and fears that Donald Trump’s plan to revive the coal sector in the U.S. could threaten their position of leader in terms of global pollution.
In fact, China fears that the U.S. can become great again, a strong U.S. is not good for China because a powerful U.S. can thwart China’s plan to become a world power.
Lauri Myllyvirta, a senior campaigner at Greenpeace Beijing, stated that China won’t start alone a fight against climate change, China is only interested to work along with other countries on this matter.
It seems that even ExxonMobil, the largest oil company in the U.S., considers that the country should not give up the commitments signed at COP 21 in 2015.
In the former administration when the U.S. was a strong fighter against climate change in the world, China announced that they want to reach their emissions peak by 2030 as part of a deal signed with the U.S. and even if now the U.S. seem to back out from all the agreements related to climate change, China might reach that target even sooner.
The problem is the fact that the emissions peak agreed by China is about 3.5 times higher than those agreed by the World Health Organization.
