Renewable fuels to power vehicles with internal combustion engine

The global energy crisis has increased the urgency to speed up the clean energy transition and it highlighted the importance of renewable energy. According to the IEA, renewable energy capacity will increase by over 8% in 2022, reaching approximately 320GW. Decarbonisation efforts and the fight against climate change have entered a new chapter. With the world moving towards power produced by 100% renewable sources, innovative solutions are required to strike a balance in energy production.

Note that technologies for replacing fossil fuels exist. For instance, the combination of hydrogen and carbon from the air using the power-to-x process creates room for the creation of carbon neutral and renewable synthetics. Hydrogen, one of the clean energy sources changing the world, can power industries, transportation, and fuel for power generation in the future. Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Hydrogen fuel cell technology is proving to be a valuable alternative to fossil fuels. As the name suggests, hydrogen fuel cells produce energy using the chemical energy of hydrogen. This means the electricity produced is clean and renewable. The applications of hydrogen fuel cells include transportation, electrifying homes, and power systems in power plants and factories. This fuel technology also offers many benefits, like low emissions, high efficiency, and fast charging times. Given hydrogen is abundant, these fuel cell technology is set to dominate the energy sector.


Produced from animal fats and vegetable oils, biodiesel is a great alternative to diesel and petrol, meaning it can power automobiles. The benefits of using biodiesel, especially in vehicles, range from energy balance and security to reduced carbon emissions. Just like car transmissions keep the engine spinning correctly, so does biodiesel. Transmissions in vehicles ensure the engine doesn’t spin too fast or too slow. Meanwhile, biodiesel provides lubricity in the engine, thus improving functionality and guarantees safety.

Natural Gas

Countries worldwide are imposing strict regulations for the usage of coal to reduce air pollution. For this reason, scientists are looking at renewable natural gas as a future fuel. Compared to fossil fuels, renewable natural gas or RNG is environmentally-friendly because it emits a smaller amount of carbon emissions, which means that is friendlier to the environment.

Typically, renewable natural gas is produced from organic waste like animal fats, plants, and food waste. Being produced from waste products, renewable natural gas is considered cleaner and more affordable.

At the same time, with the current energy crisis produced by the war in Ukaine, renewable natural gas has the potential to reduce countries’ dependence on nuclear power, coal and Russian gas.

As the world strives to reach net-zero emissions, all sectors of the economy have sought to embrace the use of renewable energy sources. Besides leveraging solar panels, and wind turbines, countries worldwide are turning to fuels of the future. They include: biodiesel, hydrogen fuel cell, natural gas, methanol, and ethanol.

Using these fuels instead of regular diesel and gas, will reduce the amount of carbon emissions produced yearly by the transportation sector.
